A significant fire broke out in central London on Thursday morning, sending thick smoke billowing across the skyline. London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that around 40 firefighters and six fire engines responded to the scene near Tottenham Street at 07:43 GMT.

The fire, which affected two buildings near Goodge Street underground station, was tackled using a 32-meter turntable ladder to douse the flames from above. LFB urged residents to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

The fire had spread to an atrium-style greenhouse near the roof of the building, so firefighters from Soho, Euston, Islington and nearby stations had to come together to put it out. Within minutes of getting the emergency call, the London Ambulance Service was at the scene and treating an adult for mild smoke inhalation. They were taken to the hospital after that.

As a safety step, people were asked to leave nearby buildings, and the cops blocked off the streets. Both commuters and locals said the smell of the smoke was “toxic and acrid,” and some said it smelt like chemicals on fire. A BBC employee reported that they could see “huge smoke rising over central London” from their office.

Fire Under Control, Cause Under Investigation

By 8:30 AM, the fire was largely under control, though emergency services remained at the scene until nearly 10 AM. LFB reported that half of the ground floor of the affected building had been damaged by flames.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation
